Everything starts with drawing. I am a firm believer that drawing is the backbone of my practice, so I explore everything in graphite, pen and ink.
I’ve always had a fascination with plants and flowers. I grew up surrounded by beautiful gardens and thriving greenhouses. But it is not only the plants found in intentional places that interest me. I like the variety of those growing wild, found scattered on the edge of a wood or a walk along the coast, especially when captured during different lights throughout the day.
Many of my pieces explore the wider sense of a ‘garden.’ Some depict places in my native Scotland and others are loosely based on planted borders in my garden in Buckinghamshire.
Most of my pieces will have some sort of bramble or thorn within them. I see these as metaphors for life. Amongst the beauty of creation, (and we find incredible beauty in the plant world), we still find thorns and brambles representing pain and suffering in each of our lives.
